The University of Kentucky Police Department recently hosted the Safer Kentucky Symposium, bringing together a wide range of leaders from private colleges, public universities, health care systems, public safety agencies, emergency management teams and student affairs offices. The event was designed as a statewide conversation focused on improving safety through better communication, coordination and a shared sense of responsibility.
Organizers emphasized that safety is not the job of any single group or institution. Instead, it requires collaboration across different sectors. The symposium gave participants a chance to discuss real-world challenges, share best practices and build stronger working relationships. Topics included emergency response protocols, mental health support on campuses, threat assessment and the role of technology in preventing incidents.
Leaders from health care institutions also took part, highlighting the growing need for hospitals and universities to work together during crises. Student affairs professionals added their perspective on how to support students before, during and after emergencies. The goal was to create a more unified approach to safety that reaches beyond individual campuses or agencies.
By hosting the event, the UK Police Department aimed to set a standard for how different organizations can come together to protect their communities. The symposium is expected to lead to follow-up meetings and joint training exercises in the coming months.
