Why Demographic and Health Surveys Matter More Than Ever in a Tight Funding Era

At a moment when global health and development funding is tightening, one of the most important tools is at risk-data. The Demographic and Health Surveys program, known as DHS, has quietly shaped how governments, aid agencies, and researchers understand the lives of millions of people for over three decades. These surveys collect detailed information on fertility, maternal and child health, nutrition, HIV prevalence, and household conditions across more than 90 countries. Without them, policymakers would be flying blind.

The problem is that running DHS is expensive. Each survey requires trained interviewers, complex logistics, and rigorous quality control. As donor budgets shrink, some countries have delayed or canceled planned rounds. This is a dangerous trend. The data from these surveys is not just academic-it directly influences where vaccines are sent, how family planning programs are designed, and whether malnutrition interventions reach the right children.

Losing this data pipeline would mean reverting to guesswork. In many low-income nations, DHS is the only reliable source of health statistics. Without it, we cannot track progress on reducing child mortality or measure the impact of climate change on food security. The surveys also provide a rare window into inequalities, showing how outcomes differ by wealth, education, and location. As funding gets tighter, protecting these surveys is not a luxury-it is a necessity for saving lives and spending limited resources wisely.
