The University of Vermont Health Network has eliminated 142 positions across its hospitals and hospice services, a move officials say will save roughly $9.5 million per year. The cuts fall mostly on administrative and management roles, though some clinical support positions were also affected. The network operates medical centers in Vermont and upstate New York, including the main campus in Burlington.
A spokesperson confirmed that the reductions include both layoffs and the elimination of unfilled vacancies. The decision comes as health systems nationwide face rising labor costs, lower patient volumes in certain departments, and tighter reimbursement rates from insurers and government programs. UVM Health had previously warned of a budget gap driven by these pressures.
Leaders emphasized that the cuts target overhead rather than direct patient care. No nurses or frontline doctors were let go, according to internal memos. However, employees in departments like billing, human resources, and quality assurance were impacted. The network offered severance packages and counseling services to those laid off.
The move mirrors similar belt-tightening at other academic medical centers. UVM Health employs roughly 14,000 people across its system. Officials said they will continue reviewing operations for further efficiencies but hope to avoid additional staff reductions. The savings are expected to help stabilize the network's finances heading into the next fiscal year.
