An NHS trust has apologised after a man with a known history of mental illness stabbed a complete stranger, an incident that investigators say could have been prevented. The attack took place in Kent after the patient, who was unwell at the time, was not properly monitored or supported by local services.
The victim, a member of the public who had no connection to the attacker, was left with serious injuries after the unprovoked assault. A review into the case found that Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust failed to act on clear signs that the man's condition was deteriorating. Staff missed opportunities to intervene, and the patient was not receiving the level of care his risk profile required.
In a formal statement, the trust acknowledged the failings and offered a full apology to the victim and their family. "We are deeply sorry that our care fell short," a spokesperson said. "This was a tragic event that should not have happened, and we have already taken steps to improve how we assess and manage risk."
The case has raised broader concerns about pressure on community mental health teams in the region. Critics argue that underfunding and staff shortages leave vulnerable patients without the intensive support they need, sometimes with violent consequences. The trust has promised to review its procedures and ensure that warning signs are taken more seriously in future.
