The University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Nebraska at Kearney officially celebrated the opening of a new rural health education complex in Kearney this week. The facility is designed to expand UNMC's academic offerings in medicine, pharmacy, public health, nursing, and allied health programs across central Nebraska.
Located on the UNK campus, the complex aims to address the growing shortage of healthcare professionals in rural areas by providing state-of-the-art classrooms, simulation labs, and clinical training spaces. University officials said the building will allow students to complete more of their education without having to relocate to Omaha or Lincoln, making it easier for them to stay and practice in their home communities after graduation.
The project represents a major investment in rural healthcare infrastructure. Leaders from both universities emphasized that the partnership is about more than just bricks and mortar. It is a direct response to the needs of a region where access to primary care and specialty services remains a persistent challenge.
Students enrolled in the new programs will have access to interprofessional training, working alongside peers from different health disciplines. This approach is intended to mirror real-world healthcare settings, where teamwork across fields is critical. The complex also includes space for community health outreach and continuing education for current professionals.
The opening ceremony drew state and local officials, faculty, and students. Several speakers noted that the facility will serve as a pipeline for future providers who understand the unique demands of rural medicine. With this expansion, UNMC and UNK hope to close the gap between urban and rural health outcomes, one graduate at a time.
