Old National Park closes after mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus, Fulton health officials say

The City of South Fulton has announced that Old National Park will stay closed for the time being, as Fulton County health officials work to treat the area and figure out when it is safe to let people back in. The decision comes after mosquitoes trapped at the park tested positive for West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne illness that can cause serious symptoms in some people.

Health officials say the park will not reopen until they have completed treatment and are confident the risk has dropped. The city did not give a specific timeline, but noted that the evaluation process is ongoing. In the meantime, signs have been posted to warn residents, and crews are expected to focus on reducing mosquito breeding spots, such as standing water.

West Nile virus is most commonly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Many people who get it never show symptoms, but others may develop fever, headache, body aches, or in rare cases, a severe neurological illness. Officials are urging people to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, and remove any standing water around their homes.
