Trump order aims to cut number of diseases all children should be vaccinated against from 18 to 11

The White House has issued a new executive order that would reduce the number of diseases on the official childhood vaccination schedule from eighteen down to eleven. The directive backs a major overhaul that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. first rolled out earlier this year, though that plan has since been stalled by court rulings.

The order essentially reasserts the administration's position that the current list of recommended shots is too broad. Supporters argue that some vaccines on the schedule have not been studied enough for long-term effects and that parents should have more flexibility. They also point to a desire to shift focus toward what they call higher-risk diseases.

Opponents, including pediatric groups and public health officials, warn that cutting the list could lead to preventable outbreaks. They note that the vaccines being removed protect against illnesses like measles, mumps, and hepatitis B, which still circulate in the U.S. and abroad. The American Academy of Pediatrics has said that any reduction in the schedule would put children at unnecessary risk.

The legal fight is ongoing. A federal judge previously blocked the health department from implementing the new schedule, saying the process did not follow proper procedure. The new executive order does not override that ruling, but it signals that the administration intends to keep pushing for the change through other channels.

For now, the official schedule remains unchanged in practice. Doctors are still following the original list of eighteen diseases, and the court case will determine what happens next. Parents and pediatricians are watching closely, as any final decision could reshape how childhood immunizations are handled across the country.
