Strategies for improving women’s health explored at student-led summit | Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Speakers at the inaugural Women's Health Student Summit at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health called for a fundamental shift in how the medical community approaches women's health. The event, organized entirely by students, brought together researchers, clinicians, and advocates to discuss strategies that go beyond traditional reproductive care.

A central theme was the need to treat women's health as a lifelong, whole-body issue rather than a narrow specialty. Panelists highlighted how conditions like heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and mental health struggles often present differently in women, yet diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols remain largely based on male physiology. One speaker noted that this gap leads to misdiagnosis and delayed care for millions.

The summit also addressed systemic barriers, including a lack of research funding for conditions that disproportionately affect women and the persistent stigma around discussing menstrual health and menopause in professional settings. Students presented data showing that when women are included in clinical trials at equal rates, outcomes improve for everyone.

Attendees emphasized the role of policy in driving change. Advocates urged future healthcare leaders to push for insurance coverage that prioritizes preventive screenings and to demand better education for medical students on sex-specific medicine. The summit concluded with a call for interdisciplinary collaboration, urging doctors, policymakers, and community organizers to work together. Organizers hope the event will become an annual platform for rethinking how the healthcare system serves women.
