America's Poison Centers has reported a troubling 31.9% increase in diphenhydramine abuse among teenagers, with case numbers more than doubling in 2026 compared to previous years. Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in popular over-the-counter allergy medications like Benadryl, is being misused by adolescents seeking a cheap and accessible high. The trend is closely linked to viral social media challenges that encourage taking dangerously high doses to induce hallucinations or a euphoric state.
Medical experts warn that even a single misuse episode can lead to severe side effects, including rapid heart rate, seizures, confusion, and respiratory depression. In extreme cases, overdoses have resulted in permanent organ damage or death. The data, compiled from calls to poison control centers across the country, shows that teens aged 14 to 18 account for the majority of intentional misuse incidents.
Parents and healthcare providers are urged to monitor medication access and discuss the real dangers of these online trends. Unlike illicit drugs, diphenhydramine is readily available in many households, making it a hidden risk. The spike in cases highlights a growing public health concern that authorities say requires both education and stricter oversight of social media platforms promoting such behavior.
