Healthcare access dominates complaints from CT's incarcerated

Health services now make up the largest share of complaints coming from people held in Connecticut's correctional facilities. According to the state Correction Ombuds office, roughly one in three of the nearly 2,000 grievances filed in the last reporting period centered on medical care, mental health treatment, or access to medication.

The ombuds report, which covers conditions inside prisons and jails, shows that issues like long waits for appointments, denial of prescribed drugs, and poor communication between inmates and medical staff are the most common problems. Some complaints also cite a lack of follow-up care after a serious illness or injury. The findings suggest that despite past reforms, the healthcare system behind bars still struggles to meet basic needs.

Ombuds staff noted that many grievances are resolved informally, but the sheer volume points to a systemic problem. They recommended that the Department of Correction improve its sick call procedures and increase transparency around wait times. The agency has said it is reviewing the report and plans to address staffing shortages in medical units. Advocates for prisoners argue that the state needs to invest more in community-based mental health services to reduce the pressure on correctional facilities. The ombuds office continues to track these cases, and the next report is expected later this year.
