A new phase of restoration is beginning at the south end of the Upper Truckee Marsh in South Lake Tahoe, and this time Barton Health is stepping in to help. The California Tahoe Conservancy has already completed the demolition of the old Motel 6 building, a former restaurant, and the parking lot that once sat on the site. With those structures gone, the focus now shifts to returning the land to a natural state.
The project aims to rebuild the marsh ecosystem, which is a critical habitat for local wildlife and plays a key role in filtering water that flows into Lake Tahoe. Barton Health is contributing resources and volunteers to support the replanting of native vegetation and the removal of invasive species. Organizers say the work will improve water quality and create a healthier environment for both animals and people who visit the area.
Planning for the next steps is already underway. Volunteers from the community are expected to join Barton Health staff in the coming weeks to help with the hands-on restoration work. The effort is part of a larger push to preserve the natural beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin and undo decades of development along the shoreline.
