Cyclospora in Maryland: Health officials report 110 cases

Maryland health officials have confirmed that cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, have climbed to 110 since the start of May. The Maryland Department of Health released the updated count this week, noting that the infections have been reported across multiple counties.

Cyclospora is typically spread through contaminated food or water. Symptoms often include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. The illness can last for weeks if not treated with specific antibiotics. Health officials are urging anyone with persistent symptoms to see a doctor and request testing, as the infection is not always caught by routine stool exams.

The source of the current outbreak has not been identified. Investigators are interviewing patients to find common foods they ate before becoming ill. Past outbreaks in the United States have been linked to imported fresh produce, such as cilantro, raspberries, and salad mixes.

The state is advising residents to wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating. Cooking food kills the parasite, but washing alone may not remove all Cyclospora if it is deeply embedded in the produce. People should also avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw produce separate from other foods.

Health officials say the number of cases may continue to rise as more reports come in from the summer months, when Cyclospora infections typically peak.
