Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. has signed a resolution authorizing him to negotiate a formal agreement with Northeastern State University. The partnership aims to design and develop new health and wellness initiatives for the community.
The resolution gives the chief the green light to work out the details of a deal that would combine the tribe's resources with the university's academic expertise. Officials say the goal is to create programs that address both physical health and mental well-being, with a focus on serving Cherokee citizens and the broader region.
Northeastern State University, located in Tahlequah, has a long history with the Cherokee Nation. The two entities already collaborate on various educational and cultural projects. This new agreement would expand that relationship into the health sector.
Specifics of the proposed programs have not been released yet. However, leaders from both sides have expressed optimism about the potential impact. They see the partnership as a way to improve access to care, promote healthy lifestyles, and train the next generation of health professionals.
The resolution marks the first formal step in what could become a major joint effort. Negotiations are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
