Baylor teen health clinics provide free medical care, mental health services

New U.S. Census data shows Texas has the highest number of uninsured residents in the country. In response, Baylor College of Medicine has expanded its network of teen health clinics across the Houston area, providing free medical care and mental health services to adolescents who might otherwise go without treatment.

The clinics target young people aged 10 to 24, offering everything from routine checkups and vaccinations to counseling for anxiety, depression, and substance use. Many of these teens come from low-income families or lack health insurance entirely. The program removes common barriers like cost, transportation, and long wait times by operating in schools and community centers.

Doctors and nurse practitioners staff the clinics, and they can prescribe medication, order lab tests, and connect patients with specialists. Mental health services are a growing focus. Staff therapists provide short-term counseling and can refer teens to longer-term care if needed.

One clinic coordinator said the goal is to catch health problems early, before they become emergencies. "A lot of these kids have never seen a doctor regularly," she said. "We want them to know there is a place they can come, no questions asked, and get the help they need."

The clinics are funded through grants and donations, and they do not bill insurance or ask for payment. Appointments are available on a walk-in basis at several locations. The program has served thousands of patients since it started, and organizers hope to open more sites in the coming year.
