Rochelle Lewis is one of more than 170 million women around the world who have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS. But for years, she and many others have felt that the name itself is misleading and harmful. The term "polycystic" suggests the ovaries are covered in cysts, which is often not the case. In reality, the condition involves a hormonal imbalance that can cause irregular periods, weight gain, acne, and fertility issues. The name, critics argue, leads to confusion, misdiagnosis, and unnecessary anxiety.
Now, a growing movement of patients and medical professionals is calling for a new name. They say the current label focuses on a symptom that not everyone has, while ignoring the broader metabolic and endocrine aspects of the disorder. A more accurate name, they believe, could help women get diagnosed earlier and receive better treatment. It could also reduce the shame and embarrassment that often come with the condition.
Rochelle, who struggled for years before getting a correct diagnosis, says the name change would validate the experiences of millions. "It would show that this is not just about ovaries or cysts," she explains. "It is a whole-body condition that affects hormones, insulin, and even mental health." Advocates are pushing for terms like "Metabolic Reproductive Syndrome" or "Androgen Excess Disorder." While no official change has been made, the conversation is gaining momentum. For women like Rochelle, renaming PCOS is not just about words. It is about finally being heard.
