Last month, a kindergarten student I counsel as a social work intern was absent from class for most of the week. This student missed school from Tuesday through Friday, raising concerns among her teachers and peers. On Friday, her teacher reached out to inquire about the child's well-being, revealing a troubling pattern that often affects young children from immigrant families.
The absence of this student highlights a larger issue: the health care needs of undocumented immigrants, who often face barriers to accessing essential services. Many undocumented individuals contribute to society in various ways, including paying taxes, yet they lack access to basic health care. This discrepancy can lead to serious health issues, not just for individuals but also for their families and communities.
Providing health care to undocumented immigrants is not merely a matter of compassion; it is a public health necessity. Ensuring access to health care for all residents can lead to healthier communities, reduced emergency room visits, and ultimately a more productive society. As we move forward, it is crucial to advocate for policies that recognize the contributions of undocumented immigrants and ensure they receive the health care they deserve.
