A new study suggests that you do not need to carve out a full 30 minutes for a workout to see real health gains. Researchers found that short, sporadic bursts of physical activity spread across the day can add up to significant benefits, particularly for heart health and longevity.
The findings challenge the common belief that exercise must be sustained and structured to be effective. Instead, the study highlights the value of "exercise snacks" -- brief periods of movement lasting one to two minutes. These can include brisk walking up a flight of stairs, carrying groceries, or a quick jog to catch a bus. When accumulated over the course of a day, these small efforts can match the cardiovascular advantages of a traditional gym session.
Researchers tracked thousands of participants using wearable devices and found that those who engaged in three to four short, intense bursts of activity daily had a substantially lower risk of death from cancer and cardiovascular disease. The key is intensity. The movement needs to raise your heart rate and breathing, even if only for a minute.
For people who struggle to find time for exercise, this is encouraging news. It means that everyday activities like gardening, playing with kids, or walking the dog can count toward your fitness goals. The study reinforces the idea that any movement is better than none, and that consistency matters more than duration. So if you cannot commit to a long workout, do not worry. Just move more often.
