Public health officials have confirmed an active case of tuberculosis at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle. The investigation is now focused on identifying and evaluating individuals who may have been in close contact with the affected person.
As a precautionary measure, Seattle & King County Public Health is recommending that approximately 130 people associated with the school community undergo evaluation for TB exposure. These individuals are being notified directly and will be offered free testing and a health screening.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs and is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is important to note that TB is not easily transmitted; it typically requires prolonged, close contact in a shared indoor space for the bacteria to spread. The health department emphasizes that the overall risk to the general school population and the public is very low.
The school district is working closely with public health officials to manage the response. Officials stress that early detection and treatment are highly effective, and the evaluation process is a standard public health procedure to ensure the wellbeing of the community.
