Forland, an internist and nephrologist, was part of the original group of educators who helped build the school in its early years. He joined the faculty in 1968, two years after the school first opened its doors. At the time, it was known as The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Today, it is the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.
Forland was recognized as a Master of the American College of Physicians, a high honor in the field of internal medicine. Colleagues described him as a quiet but influential leader who shaped the school's culture of patient care and teaching. He was known for his dedication to his students and his patients alike.
His career at the institution spanned decades. He served in various roles, including as a professor of medicine and as a leader in the department of internal medicine. His work in nephrology, the study of kidney function and disease, was a key part of the school's early clinical programs.
Details about a memorial service have not yet been announced. The university has expressed its condolences to his family and colleagues.
