LSU and FMOL Health, which operates Our Lady of the Lake, have handed out more than $1.6 million in research grants to seven different teams. The money comes from their Collaboration in Action Program, or CAP, and is meant to tackle some of the most serious health issues facing Louisiana.
The funded projects cover a wide range of medical problems. Researchers will look into cancer, trauma care, chronic diseases, obesity, and sports medicine. The goal is to find real solutions for a state that often ranks near the bottom in national health surveys.
Louisiana has high rates of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. By focusing on these areas, the program hopes to make a direct impact on patients in the region. The grants allow scientists and doctors from both institutions to work together on shared problems.
Officials say the partnership combines LSU's academic research strength with FMOL Health's clinical experience. This mix should speed up the process of turning lab discoveries into actual treatments or prevention strategies. The seven winning teams were chosen from a larger pool of applicants based on how likely their work is to improve health outcomes in Louisiana.
The announcement did not include specific details on when the research results might be published or put into practice.
