New York City's Department of Health has initiated an assessment of an apartment building in the East Village following two confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease among residents within the past twelve months. The agency confirmed it is actively investigating the situation at the housing complex, though officials have not yet identified a specific source of the bacteria.
Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with Legionella bacteria. The bacteria typically thrive in building water systems, including cooling towers, hot tubs, and large plumbing networks. City health protocols require an investigation when two or more cases are linked to the same location within a year.
The Health Department stated it is working with building management to test the water supply and inspect the property's cooling systems. Residents have been advised to run taps for several minutes before use and to avoid hot tubs or decorative fountains if they are present on site. Officials also recommend that individuals with underlying health conditions, such as chronic lung disease or weakened immune systems, consult their doctors.
No additional cases have been reported at this time, and the risk to the general public remains low. The investigation is ongoing, with results from water samples expected in the coming weeks.
