A French doctor who contracted Ebola last month while serving as a humanitarian worker in the Democratic Republic of Congo has made a full recovery and been released from the hospital, according to the country's health minister. The patient, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was diagnosed with the virus shortly after returning to France from a mission in the DRC's ongoing outbreak zone. He was immediately placed in isolation at a specialized military hospital near Paris, where he received experimental treatments and round-the-clock care.
Health Minister Olivier Veran announced the recovery on Tuesday, stating that the doctor no longer carries the virus and poses no risk to public health. "He is in excellent health and has been discharged," Veran said during a press briefing. The case was the first confirmed Ebola infection ever recorded on French soil. Officials praised the rapid response of medical teams, who followed strict containment protocols to prevent any secondary infections. No other cases have been reported among the doctor's close contacts.
The World Health Organization has been battling a persistent Ebola outbreak in the eastern DRC since 2018, which has claimed more than 2,200 lives. While the virus remains highly lethal, advances in vaccines and antiviral therapies have significantly improved survival rates for those who receive early treatment. The French doctor's recovery marks a rare success story in Europe's limited experience with the disease, underscoring the importance of rapid isolation and specialized care.
