Consuming less protein could have greater health benefits and extend lifespan

Protein-fortified products have become nearly impossible to avoid. From protein-packed cereals and coffees to specialized protein waters, the food industry has leaned heavily into the idea that more is always better. However, a comprehensive new analysis of over 350 scientific papers on protein restriction and aging tells a different story. Published on July 31 in the journal Cell Press Blue, the review suggests that consuming less protein might actually offer greater health benefits and, in certain scenarios, could even extend lifespan.

The findings challenge the current cultural obsession with high-protein diets. While protein is essential for building muscle and repairing tissue, the review indicates that a constant, high intake may keep cellular repair mechanisms, like autophagy, switched off. Autophagy is the body's process of cleaning out damaged cells, which is crucial for longevity. When protein intake is lower, the body may shift into a maintenance and repair mode that promotes metabolic health and resilience. The authors note that the benefits are not universal, and the ideal intake likely depends on age and activity level. For older adults, maintaining adequate protein is still critical to prevent frailty, but for many middle-aged individuals, dialing back the protein shakes and focusing on a balanced, plant-forward diet could be a more effective strategy for long-term health than simply loading up on more.
