Jon Sperry, associate professor of clinical mental health counseling in the College of Arts and Sciences, recently led a group of six students on an enlightening trip to Uruguay. This unique experience aimed to expand the students' understanding of mental health practices in a global context. Throughout their visit, the group engaged in various activities, including workshops and discussions with local mental health professionals.
The trip provided students with firsthand insights into the cultural nuances of mental health care in Uruguay, highlighting the importance of culturally competent practices in counseling. By interacting with local practitioners, students were able to compare and contrast different approaches to mental health treatment, enriching their academic and professional perspectives.
In addition to their educational objectives, the students also took part in community service initiatives, fostering connections with local residents and contributing to mental health awareness efforts. This immersive experience not only enhanced their academic journey but also underscored the significance of global collaboration in the field of mental health.
