Charlotte-based Atrium Health has proposed a combination with WakeMed, a move that would significantly expand the footprint of North Carolina's largest hospital system. The deal, if approved, would bring together two major players in the state's healthcare landscape and is already drawing scrutiny over potential competition issues.
Atrium Health, which operates dozens of hospitals across the Carolinas, sees the partnership with Raleigh-based WakeMed as a way to create a more integrated network. The proposal would extend Atrium's reach into the highly competitive Triangle region, where WakeMed holds a strong presence with its flagship hospital in Raleigh and several other facilities. Supporters argue the merger could improve care coordination and reduce administrative costs, but critics warn it could lead to higher prices for patients and less choice in the market.
The proposed combination comes at a time when hospital consolidation is under increased federal and state oversight. Regulators are likely to examine whether the deal would create a dominant system that could negotiate higher rates with insurers. WakeMed has not yet publicly committed to the proposal, and talks are said to be in early stages. Both systems serve millions of patients, and any final agreement would require approval from state regulators and possibly the Federal Trade Commission. The outcome could reshape healthcare delivery across central and western North Carolina.
