Health agencies in Central California are closely monitoring a small cluster of hantavirus infections, though authorities stress the risk to the general public remains very low. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has activated its Emergency Operations Center in response, designating the situation as a Level 3 event. That is the agency's lowest tier of emergency activation, typically used for incidents that require coordination but do not pose a widespread threat.
Hantavirus is a rare but serious illness spread through contact with infected rodents, particularly deer mice. People can become infected by breathing in dust contaminated with the virus from rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. Early symptoms often include fatigue, fever, and muscle aches, which can progress to severe respiratory distress in some cases.
Local health departments are working with state and federal partners to identify potential exposures and provide guidance on rodent control. Officials urge residents to avoid sweeping or vacuuming areas with rodent signs, as that can stir up infectious particles. Instead, they recommend wet-cleaning methods and proper ventilation.
No widespread community transmission has been reported, and the activation is seen as a precautionary measure to ensure resources are available if needed. Health officials continue to advise basic prevention, such as sealing holes in homes and storing food in rodent-proof containers.
