Allina Health is set to merge with California-based Sutter Health, becoming the health system's Upper Midwest division while keeping its own brand name, executives confirmed in March. The formal agreement brings together two nonprofit healthcare organizations that serve distinct geographic regions, with Allina operating primarily in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
Under the deal, Allina Health will maintain its local leadership, board structure, and community presence. The Minneapolis-based system will operate as a division of Sutter Health, which is headquartered in Sacramento and runs hospitals and clinics across Northern California. Officials said the partnership aims to share resources, improve patient access, and reduce costs through combined purchasing power and administrative efficiencies.
Allina Health employs roughly 30,000 people and runs 11 hospitals along with dozens of clinics. Sutter Health has about 52,000 employees and 24 hospitals. The merger is expected to close later this year, pending regulatory approvals. Both organizations stressed that patients should not see immediate changes in their care or insurance networks. The move reflects a broader trend of regional health systems joining larger networks to stay competitive amid rising operational pressures.
